Cajayon Centro Escolar University In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management by Vlairene J. BracamonteFerdinand Ken Banson Rynyll Dyx G. BernalAce H. Magat Edlloyd R. Panim CHAPTER I The Problem and Its Background Introduction Centro Escolar University is one of the schools that are supporting the program for operational improvement and this is the 7S.The 7S represents Sort, Sweep, Systematize, Standardize, Safety, Security, and Self-Discipline. The regular issues that are experienced by the understudies are time the executives, being confused, profitability, and demeanor issue. Executing the 7S to Centro Escolar University will be a major assistance on the understudies to improve. As it causes them apply the 7S in their demeanor make them sorted out and improve all that they do. Usage of 7S to the understudies will significantly improve the students’ problems. This can assist the m with spurring to improve and can support their certainty. 7S is posted in each working in Centro Escolar University, this is to remind the understudies to rehearse and apply the 7S in all that they do. The specialists are future BSHRM graduates. They feel that 7S are fitting to their future profession. In this motivation behind why they were obliged to survey the information and practices of 7S among third year HRM understudies of Centro Escolar University. Foundation of the StudyThis study is centered around 7S and if the third year HRM understudies realize how to utilize 7S and in the event that they are applying the 7S in their research facility practices and in their every day schedule. The specialists have directed the study about the 7S by offering surveys to the HRM third year understudies. Explanation of the Problem This investigation intended to discover how do third year level Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management of Centro Escolar University execute and follow the 7S during research facility works out. In particular, this examination looked to address the accompanying inquiries: 1.What was the profile of the respondents regarding: 2. 1. Name 2. 2. Age 2. 3. Sexual orientation 2. What are the acts of the third year BSHRM understudies as to 7S? 3. What is the information on the third year BSHRM understudies as to 7S? 4. How do the respondents apply the 7S in their research facility works out? 5. What is the significance of 7S inside the research facility? Goal of the Study The target of the investigation is to know whether the third year HRM understudies are applying the 7S in their lab works out. Suspicion of the StudyThis study depends on the presumption of the respondents that are honest and legitimate in noting the review poll. Toward the finish of the investigation, the perusers will know about the significance of 7S. This investigation will likewise give data not exclusively to the respondents yet in addition to different unde rstudies, representatives, personnel staff, and future scientists. Centrality of the Study This investigation will enable the perusers to pick up information about the significance of 7S. It will likewise assist them with being sorted out on their day by day work. This study will likewise be advantageous to the understudies, employees, and school representatives. This can likewise support the future specialists; it will assist them with growing their insight around 7S practices and include more subtleties their future examinations. Extension and Limitation of the Study The investigation is centered around the 7S and if the respondents applying it inside the food research center. The quantity of respondents was restricted to 40 people simply because the school just has 4 areas open from the third year HRM understudies. The sort procedure recognizes required things from unneeded things and expels the last mentioned. This procedure powers individuals to evacuate all things not presently required for work, regardless of whether they are in the processing plant or in the workplace. It is at first the most hard for individuals who are reluctant to relinquish parts, machines, and information just in the event that they might be required in the future. However, red-labeling things permits laborers to save and assess things and data as far as their helpfulness and recurrence of utilization. The things and data are returned, put away somewhere else, sold, parted with, or discarded. Red labeling is best done in each target zone in turn and inside a couple of days. At the point when red labeling is finished, issues and disturbances in the work process are decreased, corresponde nce between laborers is improved, item quality is expanded, and efficiency is upgraded. † â€Å"Many accept that 5S is an unquestionable requirement have tool. For any of the instruments in the toolbox for turning out to be lean speedy changeover, absolute beneficial support, botch sealing, etc 5S fundamentally helps in both the usage and continuing of upgrades. The Gold Standard for 5S is that anybody ought to have the option to discover anything in their own working environment in under 30 seconds, and anyplace else in the working environment in under 5 minutes without conversing with anybody, opening a book, or turning on a PC. 5S is the establishment for fruitful lean usage. S is the instrument to start, support, and continue the lean excursion. † â€Å"The usage group, ordinarily comprising of chiefs and group pioneers, is the following gathering to be prepared. Requiring a similar preparing as upper administration in addition to preparing in group authority, they ought to get down to earth preparing through the usage of pilot ventures. A decent methodology is to complete one test case program under the authority of the 5S counsel (an expert or interior asset completely experienced in all parts of 5S) and afterward to do a second one on their own.A program panel that incorporates the plant director and a portion of the territory laborers should organize the starter work. When the fundamental work is finished, plans portraying usage of the Five S battle ought to be arranged and discharged. At the point when the outcomes are good, the program would then be able to be propelled broad. † â€Å"5S has been drilled among numerous Japanese organizations for a long time and it is hazy when and where it was begun. I was unquestionably before the Toyota Production System, Total Productive Maintenanceâ and even before Total Quality Management had been developed. It had been drilled in numerous organizations, some time before this time. At first, it was begun as seiri-seiton, as a mix of two words which were anything but difficult to articulate, and later it was increasingly refined by including the other three wordsâ to make it a progressively far reaching idea. The words seiri-seiton was utilized generally in non-producing regions, for example, in schools, where studentsâ were advised by the educator to do seiri-seiton of their work area, books and notes.? The words were additionally utilized generally in the workplaces most to mean the game plans of records and individual articles. â€Å"My hypothesis is that having a perfect, clean, all around kept up and composed work environment isn't another post war supernatural occurrence, or an apparatus that experts wheel in and guarantee to be revolutionary†¦it’s simply presence of mind and part of encouraging aâ cultureâ of continuousâ improvement. † Notes http://emsstrategies. com/dm103103article. html http://nz. kaizen. com/5s/where-did-5s-ori ginate from. html Questionnaire Name:Yearamp;Sec: Age:Gender: Direction: 1. This incorporates the strategy for inquire about, examining procedure, respondents of the examination, poll, approval of the survey and measurable treatment.Method of Research utilized The specialists utilized the distinct technique for explore. This is intended f or the examination to assemble data about introducing existing condition, or just the methodical procedure of social occasion, dissecting and arranging the data about winning conditions, rehearses, convictions, patterns, cause, and impact to make exact translation of such information. This technique was utilized in light of its nature of speaking to and containing depiction. It is utilized to break down information taken from the survey replied by the respondents. This portrayed the evaluation of information and practices of 7S among third year BSHRM understudies of CEU Manila. Subject of the Study The subject of the examination comprised of the third year BSHRM understudies of Centro Escolar University Manila. The analysts utilized study survey in the assortment of information assembled from the respondents. This is a rundown of research or study questions asked to the respondents, and intended to remove explicit data. The scientists circulated 40 review surveys to chosen third year level Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management. The information accumulated were then counted in a quantitative structure and communicated in recurrence and appropriation. Approval of the Instrument The poll was first introduced to the exploration counselor for face approval just as substance approval. Linear Motion Lab Essays

Straight Motion Lab Essays Straight Motion Lab Paper Straight Motion Lab Paper 2. Straight MOTION In this investigation you will consider the movement of an item in one measurement from various perspectives. You will exhibit how the factors of movement are connected by separation and incorporation and examine the connection among potential and dynamic vitality. Hypothesis Why Study Motion? Movement is wherever known to mankind. Just at a temperature of total zero is the movement in anyone genuinely missing. On the off chance that movement exists, at that point so additionally does vitality. To the joy of the cutting edge physicist the instruments that were imagined by Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton and others 200 years back to depict movement apply wherever known to man, from electrons in our own bodies to the farthest system. The investigation of movement and of vitality is at the core of material science. This examination manages movement of the least complex kind, movement in one measurement or movement in an orderly fashion. Kinematics and Dynamics The subject of movement is separated for accommodation into the subtopics of kinematics and elements. Kinematics is worried about the parts of movement that bar the powers that cause movement. In a way, kinematics is focussed on the improvement of definitions: position, dislodging, speed, increasing speed and on the connections that exist between them. Elements extends the investigation of movement to incorporate the ideas of power and vitality. Definitions Position Kinematics starts with position. Assume that we photo an article moving to one side along a level way at two moments of time and superimpose the pictures for study (Figure 1). We inspect one picture with a ruler and separate the quantity of units that different the item from the ruler’s zero. The zero is a reference or beginning at a place of zero units by definition. The situation of the item at any somewhere else is, state x units. x is a prompt amount since it applies to a particular clock time-the moment the photo was taken. Position like length is a fundamental amount and is reliant just on the unit utilized. Be that as it may, position includes course too. On a basic level the item could be on our right side or to one side. To incorporate the data of bearing we utilize a vector. The extent or length of the vector, state r, will be r (or maybe x), while the bearing is to one side, which means the article is to one side of the reference point. We could likewise concur that, by show, the indication of x is sure in this specific case. Slipped by Time The two places of the item in Figure 1 must be depicted with various vectors and diverse clock times. The photos can be said to show two occasions, an underlying â€Å"i† occasion and a last â€Å"f† occasion. There is presently a passed time between the occasions equivalent to the basic distinction: ?t = t f †t I , †¦[1] unit seconds, contracted s). Remember that the ideas of clock time and passed time are extraordinary; a slipped by time is the contrast between two clock times. L2-1 L2 Linear Motion 0 rf clock time tf object ri removal ? r = rf †ri clock time ti object ? r = v ? t Figure 1. This drawing outlines an item pushing toward the starting point (left) â€Å"photographed† at two positions. The comparing clock times are shown. Position, removal and speed vectors are given diverse head styles to stress their various natures. Uprooting Displacement contrasts from position. In the passed time between the occasions the item moves starting with one position then onto the next. The removal is the distinction between the two vectors portraying the two positions: d. Eq[3] then becomes what is known as the quick speed ? dr ? =v. dt †¦[4] ? ? ? ? r = rf †ri , †¦[2] (unit meters, condensed m). Dislodging, being the distinction between two vectors, is additionally a vector. The uprooting is negative for this situation (as indicated by our show) since it focuses towards the source. Speed Average Velocity. Another amount in kinematics is the normal speed. This is the uprooting an article experiences in a single second of passed time. It is the proportion ? ? This amount is theoretical and precarious to envision: it very well may be thought of as the normal speed that may be estimated with a better discovery framework over an interminably short passed time (or the speed at a particular clock time). Practically speaking, with gear accessible in a first year material science lab, it very well may be estimated just roughly. On the off chance that the removal is known as a scientific capacity of time, r(t), at that point the momentary speed at some clock time t0 is the digression to the capacity at t0, or the principal subordinate of r(t) at t0. The finding of digressions is one of the destinations of this examination. Quickening The speed of the article in Figure 1 may change with time. The speed may diminish because of a power of grating between the item and the way. Or on the other hand the speed may increment if the way were not level and a segment of the power of gravity follows up on the article. The time pace of progress of the normal speed is known as the normal increasing speed and the time pace of progress of the quick speed is known as the immediate quickening. The two kinds of speeding up are characterized as in eqs[3] and [4] with â€Å"v† subsituted for â€Å"r â€Å"and â€Å"a† fill in for â€Å"v†. ? ? r rf †ri ? = =v, ? t ? t †¦[3] (unit meters every second, condensed m. sâ€1). The normal speed, being a vector isolated by a scalar, is a vector. The normal speed is negative here, as well, since it focuses towards the starting point. The size of the normal speed is the speed. The slipped by time in eqs[1] and [3] is a limited stretch. What might occur if this span were interminably little? Numerically, this adds up to taking the restriction of eq[3] as ? t>0. The augmentations ? ust be supplanted by the differentials L2-2 Linear Motion L2 Motion of an Object Whose Velocity is Constant In this trial you will for the most part be considering the movement of an item whose speed is evolving. In any case, for reasons for fulfillment we initially think about movement at steady speed. The instance of an item moving towards the starting point on a level plane is attracted Figure 2. We guess that the information sets (t, r), where t is the clock time and r is the position are quantifiable at ordinary spans by some identification framework. Two such focuses when plotted on a chart may show up as appeared in the upper portion of Figure 3. A PC could be modified to ascertain the â€Å"average velocity† as the incline between the two datapoints and plot it as a point on a diagram (lower half of Figure 3). The outcome is negative, the sign demonstrating the bearing of the speed vector. The PC programming utilized in this examination accomplishes something comparative by finding the normal speed by averaging over the inclines between various datapairs (7 as a matter of course). Along these lines if various datapoints were estimated and the outcomes plotted on a chart, the outcome may take after Figure 4. As the lightweight flyer moves toward the source here the position diminishes yet consistently stays positive. The speed stays at a steady negative worth. The speed is in this way simply the subsidiary or the incline of the removal versus clock time chart (or the slant of the position versus check time diagram here in one measurement). The speed apparently changes close to nothing (if by any means) with clock time thus the increasing speed (decceleration) is extremely little. Movement Detector 0 clock time: tf rf clock time: ti ri positive relocation ? r = rf †ri v = ? r additionally to one side ? t Figure 2. An article is appeared at two positions (occasions) while advancing toward a locator on a level plane. ti , ri ) Position ( tf , rf ) clock time Velocity ( tf , vf ) Figure 3. A chart of the two position-check time datapoints portrayed in Figure 2. Demonstrated additionally is a point on the speed chart as it may be created from the incline between the two datapoints increased by the indication of the speed vector. L2-3 L2 Linear Motion Figure 4. Common position and speed diagrams a s may be created for an item moving as appeared in Figure 2. Would you be able to perceive how these charts are predictable with Figure 3? Movement of an Object Whose Velocity is Changing with Time In this analysis you will for the most part be disregarding the impacts of the power of contact. Be that as it may, for reasons for understanding it is valuable to consider contact quickly. A little power of erosion must exist between the lightweight plane and the layer of air on which it moves on the grounds that the lightweight flyer supposedly slows down. Erosion acts inverse to the heading of movement (to one side in Figure 2) and in this way delivers an increasing speed additionally toward the right. This increasing speed is frequently portrayed as a decceleration as in it is inverse to the speed and depicts a speed decline. (The article is easing back down. The speed and increasing speed versus check time diagrams for this situation will take after Figure 5. It is known from different analyses (â€Å"Simple Measurements†) that the power of grinding, however little, has a muddled utilitarian structure offering ascend to a decceleration that relies upon the first (and here and there the second) intensity of the speed. Gravity, in contrast to grating, is a steady power and is along these lines a lot simpler to manage; the impact of gravity on movement we consider in the following area. Figure 5. Speed and increasing speed charts for an article moving as appeared in Figure 2 while subject to a little power of erosion. Keep in mind, charted here are the sizes of the vectors duplicated by the sign relating to the heading of the vectors. Movement of an Object Whose Acceleration is Cons

Social Media Academic Essay

English 1020 October 31 2011 Menial Media: Employees Waste Hours of Time on the Internet Many individuals concur that person to person communication in the work environment is simply requesting calamity and loss of profitability. Having various kinds of informal organizations in the work environment could likewise prompt awkward circumstances between associates that could be awful for business. In any case, some differ and accept that these destinations can unite collaborators. In addition to the fact that they believe it would unite collaborators, they additionally state this could expand business due to the ‘family-like' style that the given office has.Although this might be valid at times, examines show that most of the time, long range informal communication is one of the destructions of an organization as a result of sites, for example, Wiki Links, Facebook and Twitter that cause unsettling influences in the working environment and may even reason a portion of the organiza tion's private data to be spilled. Since person to person communication destinations are such an interruption and cause time to be detracted from efficiency, they ought to be restricted from the working environment for representatives. Bringing long range informal communication into the work environment is some of the time unsafe for one who is applying to get a job.Employers can inquire about future possibilities and see what their online life resembles. Albeit an individual will most likely be unable to be totally seen exclusively by their long range interpersonal communication site, a business may pass judgment on them dependent on it. For instance, had somebody had an image of themselves labeled online for general society to see, a business may consider that awful exposure for the organization and choose not to enlist this individual. In any case, the individuals who go after positions have choices to set their records on private and informal communication organizations are not considered liable for the material posted. When joining either MySpace or Facebook [or Twitter], the client must consent to the terms of administration and to the Web locales security policies† (Elzweig and Peeples â€Å"Using Social†). On the off chance that anything adverse occurs in the line of an individual not being recruited for an occupation because of an interpersonal interaction site, that site won't be considered responsible. In a couple of cases this accomplishes work out to the advantage of the applier. â€Å"A CareerBuilder review of in excess of 2,500 bosses, discharged in August of this current year, showed 35 percent of respondents utilize web-based social networking to advance their companies†(Hunt â€Å"Finders Keepers†).This implies that there are unlimited open doors for individuals to secure positions on commercials of long range interpersonal communication destinations. Notwithstanding, an organization can likewise utilize these desti nations to see past employments and duties and determine the status of their experience. Once more, this is beneficial for certain individuals, yet for other people, it is a bad dream experiencing their systems administration site and clear up their data. It is silly for organizations to interfere in undertakings that don't concern them. Up to a representative is carrying out his responsibility right, at that point managers should mind their own.Employers who utilize long range interpersonal communication destinations to ‘check up' or ‘review' their representatives are not being chivalrous to the individual existences of their laborers. Assuming, maybe, an applier has made it past the phase of being handpicked and chosen through the out of line methods for long range informal communication, he ought not be permitted to get to his own systems administration site during work hours. This is a significant interruption that could cause long stretches of work and efficiency to be put off with the goal that representatives can refresh statuses, tweet, and browse individual messages. Most business laborers confess to going through at any rate one hour of their work time on a long range informal communication site.Should organizations be answerable for paying representatives during the current hour of available time? Just 10% of business permit their laborers to be on long range informal communication locales at whatever point they please (Schiller â€Å"Employers Crack†). Some contend that these destinations are just ‘mind boosts' for representatives. In any case, numerous others make a significantly progressively admirable sentiment that in the event that a specialist truly required a ‘mind boost', at that point he ought to go on a brief stroll outside: less profitability lost, and substantially more sound. Person to person communication locales cause an excessive amount of interruption in the work environment and ought not be allowed.I f the interruption of checking the site a couple of times each day isn't sufficient, at that point think about cyberfights. Workers upsetting each other over these locales is asking for catastrophe. Displeased representatives lead to a miserable working environment, so why permit the chance of that to occur? Truly, one might say that these informal communities could prompt a ‘family-like condition', anyway the opportunities for the last is significantly more plausible. Collaborators contradicting every others' very own lives is a significant danger to the strength of the working environment and might prompt a worker being terminated or suspended.Embarrassing, puerile, and dishonorable contentions occur over the web each day. One attorney speaks,†I needn't bother with the world knowing each time I say something [. . . ] there's a ton that you can do to change your settings† (Schaffer â€Å"Online Networking†). What might prevent these contentions from occurri ng between collaborators in a working environment? In any event, ‘friending' colleagues is a potential issue, particularly if the administrator of the record doesn't care for work or doesn't care for the individuals at work and overlooks the way that they have been ‘friends'.This word related peril could without much of a stretch be maintained a strategic distance from by not permitting interpersonal interaction destinations in the working environment. Informal organizations are intended for ones individual life; work isn't ones individual life, so one shouldn't blend the two. It is somewhat of a hazy area for a great many people since they don't know whether they should include colleagues onto their locales or not. Laborers should work during work time and play during play time. The two ought to never be blended. It is essentially amateurish to have a Facebook page up while at a work desk. There is a perfect time for everything, and the opportune time for person to perso n communication and imparting is for save time , not working. Informal communication destinations sit around and assets for the organization. â€Å"If one representative invests one hour of organization energy in Facebook regular, it conceivably costs their manager more than $6,200 per year† (â€Å"Facebook Costs†). This time spent playing on informal communication locales is losing organizations cash, organizations are in an ideal situation simply releasing representatives home an hour ahead of schedule without pay while prohibiting long range interpersonal communication destinations, than permitting laborers to squander this money.Another peril of permitting individual lives to conflict with work lives, is the material that is posted. It is a lot of vitality to ensure that the manager can't see when, â€Å"Called in wiped out to work-Fishing Day! † is posted as a status. This could end a present profession. Once, I worked in an apparel store where a young lady phoned in wiped out, just to post on twitter a couple of hours after the fact that she and her companions were having a sleepover. This appears to be entirely innocuous, and in spite of the fact that I couldn't have cared less, my supervisor was very upset. She left an update on the board the following day saying that if individuals were not going to be shrewd about what they posted on their person to person communication locales, at that point they would be terminated. It is likewise a serious issue to ensure that no unflattering pictures that shouldn't be seen by a chief, are not seen. â€Å"If a candidate or worker exhibits an absence of caution and judgment by posting spring break photographs showing oneself clearly inebriated on a [social networking] page, a business who finds these photographs online may consider the photographs when choosing [. . . ] to hold the employee† (Baker â€Å"How Far†).Some state that individuals who are this reckless ought to be termin ated at any rate, however a great many people are totally neglectful of who they have acknowledged as their Facebook companion and in some cases simply don't think before they post. This situation could be totally kept away from if work and web based life were not blended. The ‘Basic Information' area on long range interpersonal communication locales is a factor that could destroy numerous connections at work. At work, associates presumably don't have the foggiest idea about the whole foundation detail of a significant number of their partners. Simple research could prompt inappropriate biases against others.Social organizing destinations are taken outside of any relevant connection to the issue at hand when they are brought to the work place. That isn't what they were intended for. Critical collaborators may peruse a kindred specialists data and naturally choose not to like them as a result of the data put. The rushed speculation that is brought about by these sorts of destin ations are negative since it is difficult to become more acquainted with somebody except if time has been gone through with them. Long range informal communication locales take into consideration the ‘time spent' factor to be removed and hurried speculation on character to be set up. Despite the fact that the advantages of systems administration are self-evident, the way toward meeting new individuals, setting up customary contact and building important connections, is reliably challenging† (Crappell â€Å"Preparing for Professional†). These locales make it simpler to maintain a strategic distance from vis-à-vis discussion with an individual, and simply accept that an individual is actually similar to their online profile. Coincidentally speaking awful about a ‘friended' associate on an informal communication site may be one of the most appalling things a laborer could do, except if this specialist was speaking terrible about his boss. This isn't considered digital battles or digital tormenting in light of the fact that it was absolutely a mishap, and the meddled about partner realizes that. For instance, posting on Facebook that the man in the work space to the correct scents terrible is definitely not a smart thought; particularly because of the face that he is exhausted and on Facebook also. He sees this and doesn't need showdown, so he picks the other option: The Silent Treatment. Long range informal communication locales cause developed grown-ups to act like youngsters. Individuals contend this can be forestalled by essentially paying attention. That, in any case, doesn't factor in the way that individuals overlook names each day and could

An Un-PAINE-ful Appeal essays

An Un-PAINE-ful Appeal articles Thomas Paine was something beyond a writer. Tossed behind bars over and over due to his energetic and questionable composition, Paine was one of the superior scholars on baby Americas battle for opportunity toward the finish of the eighteenth century. Most popular for Common Sense, distributed in 1776, Paine likewise composed The Rights of Man that, when blue-penciled by the legislature, just expanded its prevalence. In The Rights of Man, Paine adopts a humanistic strategy, accepting emphatically in the force and altruism of man to conquer its issues and rebukes governments that meddle with the characteristic request of society. Paines essential moral intrigue is to seem reasonable and kind by utilizing clear, unsophisticated lingual authority and a cool, loosened up style of composing. Rather than utilizing exceptional, intense expressions, Paine depends on succinct, characterized wording and a style of composing that allures the essayist to take his side of the contention. It is af ter all very hard to rebuke the thought that our own general public is more Paines reasonableness is obviously apparent in the main section where he opens with a keen, plainly expressed sentence and proceeds to his proposition, a short sentence that contains all he needs to set up his contention in the article. Paine burns through brief period in arriving at the point and infrequently wanders from that style. The initial sentence, Great piece of that request which rules among humankind isn't the impact of government, (Paine, 393) subtly states Paines contention and contains no pointless words that a few essayists like Edmund Burke regularly use for no evident reason. The article takes on a coherent vibe to it since Paine doesn't appear to let his conflict with Burke dominate his objectives in the exposition. What's more, Paine deserted the principal individual style that a significant number of his peers supported for a third-individual style that causes him to appear to be increasingly modest and gives him credibilit ... <!

Short-term prep vs. long-term prep

When people SAT prep, they have a tendency to lump it all together in one undifferentiated mass. So here I want to talk about the differences between these kinds of preparation and what different types of students can realistically expect to gain from them. Short-Term Prep I tend to classify anything from a couple of sessions through about three months as short-term prep. Short-term prep itself falls into two categories: the kind that focuses narrowly on improving a small number of skills, and the kind that focuses primarily on finding strategies that will best leverage the students existing skills. On the whole, I find that short-term prep is most successful for high-scoring students who know their strengths and weaknesses and have identified a few specific goals to accomplish. In my experience and quite contrary to popular test-prep wisdom, it can actually be much simpler to raise a score from somewhere above 650 to an 800 than it can be to raise a 570 to a 650 or even a 610. Theres almost no way to hit the high 600s, or even the mid-600s, without having solid skills, and at that point improving ones score primarily becomes a question of identifying and focusing on a handful of discrete concepts. When a single problem such as timing in involved, it is sometimes enough to work through a representative sampling of questions to illustrate various principles and strategies, which the student can then practice applying independently. Let me give you an example. In the past year, Ive worked with two students who already had 800s in both Math and Writing but whose Reading scores lagged more than 100 points behind. Both of them came to me with very specific issues: one needed work only on timing, so we talked about how getting the gist of each paragraph from reading the first few sentences eliminated the need to waste time trying to comprehend every single word, and about how to identify overall structure quickly by reading topic sentences. The other student needed work understanding hard humanities passages, function (purpose) questions, and big picture questions. The former jumped to an 800 from a 680 after only a single meeting (I had also done a couple of sessions with him months earlier, before the PSAT) and a few practice tests; the latter rose to a 720 from a 650 after about three months of more or less consistent work. We starting off just doing the most difficult humanities passages I could find so he could practice figuring out the important points without getting bogged down in confusing language, then worked up to full tests. Short-Term prep for lower-scoring students (below 600) students can be effective, but its maximum benefits tend to show up in the Math and Writing sections, which are rule-based and relatively straightforward. In my experience, it rarely produces the kinds of significant gains in Critical Reading that higher-scoring students see. Here I do have to mention that students with solid skills who are just beginning SAT prep may not score well because they havent learned to transfer their skills to the test; theres often a very big difference between someone who scores a 550 CR on their-first ever practice test and someone whos still scoring 550 after a year of prep. Provided that they are willing to spend lots of time learning vocabulary and do not have difficulty thinking strategically, a student starting at 580 and aiming for a mid-600s score can sometimes learn enough to parlay their skills into a 50-70 point increase in the space of a few months. (If they want to spend more than a couple of months prepping seriously, however, they can often raise their scores well into the 700s). For students scoring persistently below 600 (lets define persistently as after six months or more), however, short-term prep is usually a much dicier prospect. In such cases, a sub-600 score is usually an indicator of multiple missing skills, and the amount of work involved in acquiring those skills is what sets Critical Reading apart from the other two sections. As one article I came across recently termed it, reading is three-dimensional problem. No matter how self-contained a passage may seem, it always has a real-world context; the more familiar the reader is with its subject matter and the conventions of its genre, the faster and easier the reader will be able to understand it. Theres also the decoding aspect: students who never learned to read phonetically are often either stymied by unfamiliar words and will come to a grinding halt when they encounter them, or simply plug in a similar-looking word that causes them to misunderstand the passage. When this type of confusion happens repeatedly, students can end up with only the most fragmentary idea of what theyve read. A lack of familiarity with complex grammatical structures (multiple clauses, non-essential clauses, inverted subject-verb structure, separation of subject and verb within a sentence) and the ability to intuit where a sentence or a paragraph or an argument is going can also severely impede comprehension and make reading an excruciatingly slow and confusing process. The real problem, however, is that fluid comprehension results from the interaction between all of these skills, in ways that researchers do not entirely understand. What researchers do understand, however, is that the relationship between the acquisition of individual skills and overall reading level is exponential. *All* of the skills must reach a critical point before their interaction results in a jump to a noticeably higher level; drilling concepts in a single area has limited effects. And because, as I discussed in my last post, because persistently low scores often result from a combination attention and memory issues as well as self-management difficulties and lack of contextual knowledge, it can be extraordinarily difficult to find success with a strategy-based approach. Thats not to say that these students cant improve from long-term, skills-based preparation if they are willing to work very, very hard, simply that there are no quick fixes when someone has so many gaps across the board. When the College Board says that test-prep doesnt make much of a difference, this is what they mean, and in this sense I cant help but agree with them. Trying to do short-term prep with a very weak student has made me realize how well-constructed the SAT really is. What seem like simple tricks to a 700-level student are actually huge obstacles to one scoring 250 points lower. Long-Term Prep While long-term prep (six months+) might seem like the better option, the reality is that its efficacy varies widely and, as is the case for short-term prep, depends on the particular students needs. In my experience, there is usually no way to raise a below-600 Reading score to 700+ (or even 600+) without serious, sustained long-term effort, and students who are aiming to cross a major score threshold should be aware of the work involved in achieving such a goal. The most successful students Ive had by far are the ones whose parents came to me with the understanding that test-prep was likely to be a long-term project, one that would require consistent work, and who were actually willing to put in that work or whose parents were willing to force them to put in the work. The father of one of my students kept a massive index-card box full of vocabulary flashcards with which he would proceed to torture his son on a daily basis. It took a year, but he played a huge role in getting his severely ADD (but extremely smart) son from a flat 500 CR to a 670. Let me repeat that, by the way: not a quick fix, a year. This type of prep typically involves acquiring skills that for whatever reason are either not being mastered or not being learned period in school. It also tends to involve some fairly intensive remediation, and that simply takes time. You wouldnt try to learn a years worth of chemistry in one hour a week for a couple of months, would you? So why on earth would you treat the SAT that way? And I would argue that that is in fact a valid analogy: Critical Reading tests concrete, specific comprehension and reasoning skills that can be taught much the way any subject can be taught the only difference is that those skills are not, for the most part, being taught in the classroom, and tutoring must often replace school rather than complement it. I used to argue with Debbie Stier about the amount of time an average student should reasonably expect to spend studying for a 100+ point increase, but having learned the hard way when enough of my mid-range students didnt improve after a couple of months, I now concur with her assessment of a year. Its a safe bet that youll need that long to digest new skills to the point where you can apply them on the fly in a high-pressure situation when youve been up since 6am and are sure that you just completely blew the last section. Trust me: it takes a long time. Given the time, I now treat Reading much the way I used to treat Writing and dont even bother looking at the test until weve worked through the various skills that it involves. It may not be fun to spend a couple of months just discussing how passages are organized (anecdote, commentary, main point, counterargument), but surprisingly enough, its a whole lot easier to transfer skills to a test once you actually have them. For students who start off scoring very well (700+), however, burnout can be a real danger. For them, it makes the most sense to focus in on their weakest areas and spend some time focusing seriously on them rather than take test after test after test for months on end (although granted, if their biggest problem is managing the whole test itself rather than any specific skill, then taking lots of practice test might be necessary.) There is such thing as a point of diminishing returns, and its not pretty once someone goes too far past it especially if their parents are demanding perfect scores. Ive worked with some kids who kept prepping way past the point where it was beneficial for them to do so, and eventually it got to the point where it felt like an exercise in futility for both of us. They clearly no longer cared, and I was exhausted and increasingly uncomfortable trying to hold their interest when it was obvious they just wanted the whole thing to be over. At a certain point, you either have to put in the effort to really get yourself to the next level or decide that youre happy with what you have. I know that some of you wont believe me, but I feel obligated to reiterate this here: An SAT score is only one part of your application. While a low score can keep you out, a high score alone will not get you in. No admissions committee at any elite (non-technical) school will take an otherwise undistinguished kid with a 2350 when they can take a kid with a 2250 or, horror, a 2200 and something genuinely interesting to contribute. It is not worth spending all your time trying to get a 2300+ if doing so will come at the expense of other parts of your application. Im not going to say much about medium-term prep here (4-6) months except that I find it occupies and awkward middle ground: it isnt quite long enough to build and solidify skills from the ground up, but it is often long enough to become frustrating for a kid hovering around the 2200-2250 range and trying to break 2300/2350. If someone wants to spend time just memorizing vocabulary, thats fine, but there are better things to do with ones time than spend months obsessing for the sake of what often comes down to five or six questions on the entire test when simply working more carefully could accomplish the same goal in a few weeks. For a 600-650 ish student who needs a combination of skill- and strategy-work, however, it can be very effective assuming the time is used effectively. I realize that this post has already become a bit long-winded (try as I might to be succinct, I just cant get past my habitual verbosity what can I say, I like to ramble on), so Ill just say this: Ive seen the greatest number of problems arise when people expect long-term results from short-term prep, so whichever one you choose, adjust your expectations accordingly. Take a hard look at your score, your skills, your goals, the amount of work youre honestly willing to put in, and what you want to get out of SAT prep. If you dont want to spend months memorizing vocabulary and your goal is to get the test over with a soon as possible, youre probably best off looking for some short-term strategy-based prep; if youre starting at a 550 and wont settle for anything less than a 700, plan on a year, and expect to do a lot of work. There is no one-size fits all, and the best you can do is to choose the option that most suits your needs and be aware that your score will be a reflection of your choice.

I think I have somewhat average emotional intelligence. I am to a certain level able to perceive my feelings but I feel as though at times I can’t effectively identify my own strength and weaknesses. Also sometimes I tend to not think about the situational constraints. An example of this would be that I once accepted work for 15 days straight with no break, and by the end of the 15th day I was down with a fever. I often tend to know my friends are upset before they even tell me, even during a phone conversation or text conversation. I think I have certain ability to manage others actions and emotions towards me. An example of this would be my ability to change individuals mind about purchasing certain products from where I work. Some individuals come in quite certain that they will never buy the certain product but I usually am successful in selling these products to individuals especially instant credit. I think I need to improve on myself awareness and need to learn to understand my emotions and realize the limitations for myself instead of pushing myself over thresholds. A good way to improve this to be more mindful about my emotions and any physical cues I have. I think I also need to understand my weaknesses and my strengths. I think analysing someone’s emotions throughout the day could be an effective strategy for this but I think keeping a diary and going back and reading over emotions I had experienced and analysing them and

Satan s Location And Physical Attributes - 1096 Words

Lucifer is the infamous angel who rebelled against God in hopes of becoming a God himself. He constructed an army of angels in opposition of God. Despite this, Lucifer was incapable of defeating God and was struck down from the Garden of Eden to hell. In Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, Dante and Virgil encounter Lucifer in the last circle of hell before they ascend to Purgatory. It is here in the circle of Judecca that Lucifer had been condemned for eternity as a result of his treachery against God. In my essay, I will argue that Lucifer’s location and physical attributes ironically reflect qualities of God in such a way that Lucifer becomes mocked. Dante Alighieri utilizes Lucifer’s characterization to illuminate the force of God’s divine power in The Divine Comedy. Before exploring the relationship between Lucifer’s location and Jesus Christ’s tomb, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, I will first explain how the church is relative to the Divine C omedy despite its Christian Orthodox origin. Film Analysis The Last Metro Essay Example For Students

Film Analysis The Last Metro Essay Francois Truffaut’s classic film The Last Metro depicts the frustration, confusion, and compromise in German occupied WWII France through the lens of theatre. A strong underlying theme of the movie is ambiguity. For instance, the character Bernard Granger is a young, handsome actor who supports the resistance but his actions are very unclear. The portrayal of Bernard Granger parallels France’s romanticized images of resisting the German occupation when in reality who collaborated and how many were part of the resistance is vague at best. Bernard Granger is mostly concerned with using his dashing looks and charm to shamelessly flirt with women, but still finds time to meet with his friend in the resistance. From what we are shown of Bernard he is against the occupation but his actions are, for the most part, passive. Bernard’s involvement and ideals are largely unexplored except for the implication that he turned the theater’s record player into a bomb. However, we never see the explosion or become involved in his fight. The viewer is never shown any action, hear any discussions regarding the various governments or political environment, or come to understand any sense of the resistance as an entire movement. One only comes to understand that Bernard is a â€Å"sexy rebel† who you assume is an active member of the resistance. One defining moment for Bernard is when his friend from the resistance is arrested. Bernard is apparently waiting to meet with a member of the resistance when his friend is swarmed with police right in front of him and he does nothing but watch. Perhaps he realizes that he can only do so much and he is better off continuing the work without his friend, but we never see him take any initiative to continue organizing and acting against the German occupation. What we do see, however, is Bernard Granger’s proposed resignation from the theater in order to follow the resistance. Although he at first appears to have followed through with his plans, we later become suspicious of whether he did in fact go off to fight. This is not far from the overall cultural lack of clarity regarding the resistance. Karen M. Radell states in How Subtext Shapes Narrative in Francois Truffauts The Last Metro and Claude Berris Uranus, â€Å"In French Cinema, especially, we are witness to the struggle between two opposing memories and perhaps two opposing desires: the desire for the affirmation and the desire for truth (Radell, 191). † In The Last Metro Truffaut is giving us neither. Even with his â€Å"epilogue† to sum things up, Truffaut still leaves Bernard’s journey completely open to interpretation. The loss of those two unaccounted for years doesn’t convey anything except the romanticized notion of â€Å"maybe he did something. † Truffaut is playing with the idea that France likes to see itself as Bernard Granger, but what does Granger really do? What are his beliefs and just how involved with the resistance is he? The fact that the details are not only unclear, but are almost neglected entirely, is indicative of the ambiguity of the times and the preferable image of a more active resistance.

Robert Frosts The Road Not Taken Essay Example For Students

Robert Frosts The Road Not Taken Essay The poem The Road Not Taken is about the one thing that every living human being will and does encounter, multiple times through out life, it is the miracle of being able to choose. With that choice we must also face the fact that we can never go back and explore the other road not taken. Some choices are easier to choose while other takes some contemplating and time to resolve. But when it is all said and done and we have made our choice, there is still the road we didnt choose and often times we wonder about the road not taken. In the first stanza is a place where two roads diverged which represents the encounter of having to choose from two paths a direction that will dictate the rest of ones life. The Road Not Taken basically talks about the many obstacles in life, the choices and decisions that you have to make, and how the things you choose affects everything in your life and in your future. Frost also tells how he chose a path or a road, that even though was odd or different from everyone elses, he went on with his instincts and decided that it was the right choice. He tells how one single decision in life can make huge or drastic differences being either good or bad. This was expressed when he said Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. I found that throughout this poem there was much symbolism within it. Identifying that it was written in first person form showed that this poem relates to the author on a personal basis, and that it was probably written to symbolize his life. But when talking about peoples lives, you can conclude that peoples lives are generally and individually very different from everyone elses lives, or at least seems to be because nobodys life can ever be the same as another persons. The thing that always holds true though, is that the major issues peoples lives are always ironically similar to each other or, at least can relate to them in many ways. Therefore, I found that this poem not only symbolizes or relates to the author, but it also symbolizes or holds true to almost everybodys lives. One of the major symbols within this poem is the roads. When he says Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, he is using the roads to symbolize the paths, choices, and decisions that he has to make in his life. Those decisions guide the way to his future, because when you come to a two way street or road you have to decide or make a choice on which path to take. Also when he says And sorry I could not travel both And be on traveler, he is telling us how he is insecure on which road to take because he is unsure of whats ahead and would like to travel both roads to come up with a conclusion or a decision on the correct road to take. So overall, what road basically symbolizes in this poem is the options that he has in his life and the decisions that he has to make. Another symbol in this poem is the many observations that he makes. When he says long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, he is using his observations to symbolize the brainstorming, analyzing, and thinking you have to do before or ahead of time when you are offered two options in your life and only one path to take. He is telling us how we, the people always have to do those things first, to guarantee or insure that your decision is safe. Because who doesnt want the best for themselves? The title The Road Not Taken relates to the poem in many ways because the poem is basically about a road not taken. Deforestation Of The Pacific Northwest Essay Its about a person who is confronted with two options to choose from, a split road. Never really knowing the correct road to take the person chooses one path or road after analyzing .

The Lightning Storm Essay Example For Students

The Lightning Storm Essay â€Å"In one heavy thunder-shower the lightning struck a large pitch pine across the pond, making a very conspicuous and perfectly regular spiral groove from top to bottom, an inch or more deep, and four or five inches wide, as you would groove a walking-stick. I passed it again the other day, and was struck with awe on looking up and beholding that mark, now more distinct than ever, where a terrific and resistless bolt came down out of the harmless sky eight years ago. † Henry David Thoreau, Walden Walden, by Henry David Thoreau has many essay worthy quotations, but this one struck home with me because I can relate with what he experienced. We will write a custom essay on The Lightning Storm specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I was able to have a similar reaction and feeling as what he had during this event. In Walden he talks about how the lightning struck a large pitch pine. It caused the tree to have a perfect spiral grove carved out of the tree all the way down. I think that just shows you how much damage a single bolt can be, but at the same time how beautiful it can make something. I think that it is amazing how something so powerful can make something beautiful in the end. Over the past summer my friends, family and myself were staying at a campground when we had a thunderstorm. We didnt think much of it because it is not uncommon in our area to have many thunderstorms. So we were relaxing in our camper when all of a sudden we saw and heard a lightning bolt strike a few trees. And because of this we lost power to our camper. Upon further inspection of the campgrounds we found out that one of the bolts from the lightning hit the main office building at the phone line five feet behind one of the workers of the camp. When it hit it sent power serge back down the power lines to our site. That is why we lost power at are camper. We were looking at the office and noticed that the Wi-Fi router looked odd when we looked at it closer we noted that most of the wiring in that area was fried along with the router. Parts of the phone jack that was on the wall were scattered across the room. There is also a huge char mark on the wall where it came out of the wall. Our friend, the worker was lucky to be alive. I still think about how lucky he was not to get hit. Our friends that were camping in tents a few sites away saw one of the branches of lightning come down and hit the ground, then skip accost the ground in many different directions. Its scary when you look at what Mother Nature is capable of doing and the amount of damage she can cause with just one lightning bolt. After all the commotion ended my family friends and workers all got together in the office and just enjoyed each other. We were thankful nothing happened to our friends and no serious damages happened to the camp. The only things that got damaged were material things that we can replace over time but we can’t replace a person. So instead of having a depressing evening sulking over the damages we instead had a little party celebrating the life that we have. Another incidents that happened because of lightning is the house my family and I live at has been struck three times in the last six years. Two of the three instances has caused many of are electrical devices to be fried. Some include three televisions, an Xbox, two laptops and a few smaller personal items. Also during one of the strikes, if you go into our living room you can see where it hit the side of the house. We know that this is where it hit because where it made contact with the outside of the house you can see char marks going up the siding. .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .postImageUrl , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:hover , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:visited , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:active { border:0!important; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:active , .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75 .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u80105e6b9108950adc0f7cdde1f3ac75:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: General James Longstreet EssayWhen you look at the exact same place on the inside of the house you can see about two inches around where the paint on the wall got blown off of the wall and creaked even more paint for about a circumference of five inches. At that spot on the wall we had a picture frame hanging and when the lightning struck the house it blow it right off the wall. My mother and myself were both home at this time and when it hit we could feel the electricity in the air from the strike. After we calmed down from the adrenaline rush that we had we looked around and saw that the house was fine. We saw the beauty in our home still standing. I can relate with Waldens situation because I have seen a few lightning strikes but I would love to see something as amazing as the tree. Any of the strikes that happened around myself have all caused damages to thinks but we still saw the beauty in are surroundings. But to someone else they might not see any beauty in the situation. Walden showed us that sometime you have to step back from ones busy life and just enjoy what you have around you in your life.

A Doll’s House Analysis of Nora

A Dolls House Analysis of Nora â€Å"I must stand on my own two feet if I am to find out the truth about myself and about life,† To what extent is Nora a tragic heroine? -1497 words (excluding title) A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen is a modern tragedy that is centred around the life of a typical Norwegian household in the Victorian era, focusing on the trials and tribulations that face Nora Helmer in this patriarchal society. A Doll’s House explores not only the status of women, but how they are victims of social forces to the extent that they are left with the role of a â€Å"dollwife†. During the course of this essay, I intend to study the character of Nora and to what extent she qualifies as a tragic heroine. As the curtain opens to the first act, we are introduced to Nora as an â€Å"extravagant little person†, a â€Å"sweet little spendthrift†; giving the audience the impression that she will be yet another undeveloped female character as seen in previous tradition al tragedies. Ibsen uses patronizing language to portray Torvald’s view of his wife, how to him she was just a â€Å"sweet little skylark†, the word â€Å"little† emphasizing Torvald’s misogynistic ego, and how he uses typically ‘loving’ terms but makes them seem condescending and demeaning. Aristotle’s description of a tragic hero as outlined in his book Poetics , is where he discusses the aspects of one’s character which qualify one to be a tragic hero, ideas which have been accepted and expanded for several centuries, and often used as a ‘mould’ for tragic heroes. In order to reach my conclusion and decide to what degree Nora is a tragic heroine, I will compare Nora’s character to some of the ideas Aristotle discussed in his book. According to Aristotle, ‘the tragic hero is a man who is a mixture of good characteristics and bad characteristics’. Regardless of the ‘requirement’ of being male, Nora fits this aspect of his definition perfectly as she can be seen as both the epitome of good and evil within the play, depending on one’s perspective. Ibsen establishes Nora’s character as not purely vapid (as we perhaps thought based on our first impression of her) but a woman who gave up the â€Å"necess[ities] of life† and went to extreme lengths to â€Å"save [her] husband’s life†, even though it was considered â€Å"imprudent† in Victorian society, where a woman was â€Å"transferred† from being, firstly a good daughter, secondly a good wife and finally a good mother. Consequently, Nora’s character can also be seen as having ‘bad characteristics’ (one of Aristotle’s prerequisites of being a tragic hero) as she undoubtedly â€Å"commit[ted] a fraud† and as Krogstad says, â€Å"the law cares nothing about motives†, even if Nora â€Å"did it for love’s sake†. Ib sen stated that ‘a woman cannot be herself in modern society. It is an exclusively male society, with laws made by men’ with no regard to female emotions. Torvald â€Å" shakes his finger† at Nora and says that â€Å"a songbird must have a clean beak to chirp with†. Ibsen’s use of stage direction clearly shows Torvald’s condescending behaviour towards his wife. It also shows that even after eight years of marriage, Torvald Helmer underestimates his wife’s character or capabilities to the extent that it is questionable whether he knows her at all. Ibsen suggests that even though the plot unfolds in a male dominated society, those same men could be easily deceived by their wives, as shown by Torvald and Nora’s relationship. Even though Ibsen has followed Aristotle’s idea, he has left it open to interpretation as Nora’s actions can be interpreted as ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

E Ink Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

E Ink - Case Study Example The company was receiving lots of feedback from potential investors and customers who had different views of the best use for electronic ink. The company had to decide the best opportunities for the company based on the company’s vision. The company wanted to create radio paper, but the technology was not ready for that application. The firm had multiple opportunities to generate money using the technology for other applications. Another dilemma the company had was the fact that it needed more money to continue its venture. The firm needed an additional $20 million for its second round of financing. There was plenty of interest from venture capitalist interested in investing in the company. The firm had to decide how to obtain the money and which investors to choose. The strategy the firm ends up choosing would affect the capital structure of the enterprise. Selling off too much equity could relinquish control of the company. On the other hand using debt instruments could plac e the company at risk since the firm was not generating any revenues yet. 2. The three stage approach that E Ink has plan is a very sound business strategy. The company has to take advantage of the firm’s capabilities to generate revenues. The firm cannot afford to wait 4 to 5 years for the radio paper to be ready. The first stage of the plan is to use the electronic ink to make large area displays. The marketplace for this product is huge due to the fact that there are thousands of businesses that can benefit from the application of electronic ink for its advertising displays. The company could afford to launch this product after it receives its second round of financing. The firm needs between $10 million to $20 million dollars to launch the product. The company already has a contract with JC Penney to develop its first large area displays. The product offers many advantages to customers such as lower costs and the ability to change advertising messages without having to in cur in the cost of manually changing the sign. The second stage of E Ink’s plan is to utilize the technology for flat panel displays. By 2004 the flat panel market was supposed to reach $25.9 billion. The relevant market in which E Ink could apply its invention was between $4.9 billion to $6.9 billion. The use of electronic ink enables companies that use flat panel displays to add value to its products which would allow the firms to sell their products at a premium price. The application of electronic ink would provide greater visual appeal and lower power consumption. The company needs between $30 million to $50 million to finance this phase. The third phase of the project is radio paper. Radio paper would enable the company to create newspapers and books using the electronic ink technology. The use of the technology would revolutionize the publishing industry. The use of the technology could be extremely advantageous for publishers because it could create a paper free distr ibution model. The company could be ready to create electronic books in two to three years and newspapers in four to five years. The amount of money needed to finance phase three is between $50 million to $100 million. 3. The company needs to raise money in order to finance its phase I of the project. The firm is currently spending over $500,000 a month and it soon will increase its expenses to nearly $1 million a month. The company estimates that it needs $10 to $20 million to accomplish phase I. NewCorp Scenarios of Workers Protection - Essay Example The essay "NewCorp Scenarios of Workers Protection" talks about the employment laws that stipulate rights of workers and it is the duty of all employers to ensure that they safeguard the rights of their workers by offering good working conditions. In the case of NewCorp, Paul has been exposed to work in a dangerous environment, which has made him be claustrophobic. He explains that the condition arose because of working in the confined spaces and if this issue is taken to court and he proves this, the court will rule in his favor and compensation will have to be made. The working environment has had a case before of another worker who was injured while doing his job and this proves that the environment is not conducive. A Comparison of Online Universities to Traditional Universities Essay

Online Universities and Traditional Universities Traditional universities are a wonderful way to study for students who have the time and patience to deal with teachers and classmates. In contrast, online universities are the ideal way to study for students who do not have the time to go to school and those who enjoy working at their own pace. Ultimately, everyone chooses which route works best for him or her. Traditional universities require students to attend class in person on a daily basis. One adva...

Meat packing industry Essay

Introduction America’s fast food industry was founded by self made man who took risk, worked hard, some not even going to collage. Today the industry relies on a low-paid and unskilled workforce, where a handful are able to rise up the corporate ladder, while the vast majority lack fulltime employment, receive no benefits, and end up quitting after a few months. The fast food industry prospered over the last 30 years because minimum wage was lowered, marking was directed at children, federal agencies meant to protect workers and consumers ended up working for the companies, and corporations worked with congress to oppose laws that didn’t help them. The â€Å"American world view† is embodied in fast food because it takes advantage of those who don’t know any better. Chapter 1 The element of car based restaurants like the ones started in Southern California encouraged the spread of fast food because they had good food, became successful, and were very popular among young people. Chapter 2 Disney and Kroc were similar because they both used science to sell their products, made up famous mascots to sell products and both focused selling to kids. They were different because Disney founded his company, and Kroc bought his, they sold different products, and Kroc wasn’t involved in politics, while Disney was. Their companies cooperated when McDonald’s agreed to sell Disney toys and Disney agreed to allow McDonald’s in Disneyland. The fast food industry started with billboard ads to attract kids and evolved to adverting every where, from TV, to the internet, to school hallways. They also make the restaurants themselves fun for kids with play places and selling toys so they want to go more, and even as adults bring their own kids. Personally, I don’t think it is ethical to advertise in schools because it fast food is unhealthy and kids should be learning that, not that the burgers at McDonald’s get and A in taste. Chapter 3 Most employees of fast food restaurants ate teenagers because most are willing to work long hours with little pay. Fast food corporations relentlessly stop their workers from unionizing by doing things like integrating workers with information about a possible union with lie detectors, or closing locations with unions and opening new locations near by. Working conditions at fast food restaurants are unsafe. Typical dangers the employees face ate slips, fall, cuts, burns, and robberies. Problems are dealt with by increasing security with cameras or more parking lot lights. If I worked at a fast food restaurant and I injured my self, I might not tell my manager because I could loose my job because they could blame me for the injury. Chapter 4 The advantages of starting your own business is if it is successful, you could get a lot of money, not to mention you are your own boss so no one besides the government tells you how to run your business. The disadvantages are the business could be unsuccessful and you could loose a lot of money. The advantages of working for someone else are you do not have to make too many tough decisions. The disadvantages are you will not make as much money as your boss, and you may not like your boss for whatever reason. Some legal issues that fast food franchises have been involved in are the Coble’s Bill which makes franchises obey the principles other companies follow. The Subway fast food franchise was involved in the SBA which helps restaurants by giving them government funds. Subway got involved and made it so they would get extra money. Chapter 5 Family farms are disappearing because industry farms take all the business and close family farms because they have no one to sell to. there are only a few small potato farms left because industries take up all the land and business. The take-over of agricultural farms effects communities because local farms go out of business and communities become dependent on the corporate farm. Chapter 6 Development and fast food farms take land and effects cattle pastures because there is less land for the cattle to graze. Since most cowboys and ranchers have gone out of business, they have become irreverent in today’s culture. The government set up the Sherman Antitrust Act and a congressional investigation in the meet packing industry to help ranchers. Later, the Reagan administration allowed the top four meat packing firms to merge and they took over the cattle markets. Corporate domination affected family farms by forcing them to work for them or go out of business. Self-reliance is still a viable goal for Americans, but has become very difficult because of big corporations. The fast food industry makes chicken farmers work for them or they would get no business. In farm culture, the land is a tangible connection to the past, meant to be handed down and not sold. To native Americans, the land meant life and prosperity. In traditional Irish culture, the land is a link to past generations and to loose the land meant to fail your relatives. Their concept of land is similar to the American concept. Chapter 7 The demands of the fast food industry changed towns by making is so almost everyone ends up eating fast food because the industries are aloud to put their restaurants wherever they want and advertise as much as they want until the town’s economy runs on the fast food restaurants. Chapter 8 Meatpacking is dangerous because of the machines and rarely cleaned cutting tools. Since a meatpacking manager’s bonus is based in part on injury rate, many injuries go unreported and the worker is either given an easer job to takes time off to recover. Chapter 9 The meat packing and meat processing industry has been a spreader of disease because the animals are not screened well enough or sick workers spreading disease on the animals. After reading about the pathogens in hamburger meat, I am concerned about food poisoning in fast food. E. coli is not common in restaurant food, but is likely to be in hamburger meat. Chapter 10 Many Americans are obese because of lack of information and improper food laws. Fast food probably plays a big part in obesity because it provides unhealthy food to almost every where. Americans are probably more obese than other countries because fast food started here. Fast food companies increase the size of their meals to effect the calorie count look better for the per serving part. This effects American health because it is misguiding and you eat more than you thought you were going to. People in other countries do not want fast food because they have seen its effect on America. Epilogue The free market Schosser talks about leaves workers unprotected with little interference from the government. In the quote, Schosser is referring to the free market. I agree to what Schlosser says on 216. I believe the government needs to work harder to protect both the workers and consumers of fast food. At the end of the Epilogue, the author remedies his criticisms with the fact that it is a persons choice to eat want. Afterword Mad Cow disease is a disease that slowly destroys the brain and can be spread through hamburger meat. It can be controlled by feeding cows grass instead of corn and hormones, and inspecting the meat better. Cattle get infected by it because they stand in the dung of an effected cattle. It is a very serous threat to humans.
